We asked archaeologists, historians, and classicists: who are the archaeologists the public should know? These profiles share the life and work of important archaeologists, and celebrate the excitement of archaeological discovery.
Join us for these live lectures featuring different archaeologists throughout the year. Each lecture offers a short, thirty-minute talk on a variety of archaeological topics. The talks are free, but registration is required. Most lectures will be recorded and available via the link below. Stay tuned for more information about upcoming lectures.
The early registration deadline for the 2022 Annual Meeting is just days away. Be sure to register by Friday November 19 to get the lowest rate. All registrations for the in-person meeting also include full access to the virtual platform. Also, reserve your hotel room at the same time if you are planning on attending in-person. The block will stay open through mid-December.
International Archaeology Day 2021 was Saturday, October 16, 2021. The AIA’s largest outreach initiative usually features hundreds of in-person archaeological activities, but celebrating IAD during a pandemic necessitated a complete rethinking of the program. This year we once again turned our focus from in-person events to mostly virtual ones. We would like to thank all our collaborators who displayed incredible creativity and resourcefulness in providing IAD programs and activities. IAD programs provide a chance to uncover the past and experience the thrill of discovery.
ARCHAEOLOGY has been published continuously for more than 70 years by the Archaeological Institute of America, which is dedicated to supporting archaeological inquiry and to fostering the pursuit of knowledge about human heritage. The November/December issue of ARCHAEOLOGY explores how Nubians preserved vanishing religious traditions at ancient Egypt’s last temples. Other stories include a deep dive into a 3,500-year-old ritual pool in Italy, the tale of an Old West ghost town, a Mesopotamian war memorial, and the complicated history of a 17th-century castle on Ghana’s coast.
The AJA, one of the world's most respected journals devoted to Mediterranean archaeology, has set the standard for archaeological scholarship since 1885. The October 2021 issue brings readers articles about Assyrian artists' depiction of people from Syro-Anatolia, the stadium-gymnasium complex at Messene and its role in the assertion of civic identity, the identification and significance of marble statuettes of Aphrodite probably carved on Delos, and the application of cognitive approaches to reading the so-called Archive Wall at Aphrodisias. Open access content includes a letter from outgoing Editor-in-Chief Jane B. Carter, a field report on the Early Bronze Age levels of Hacımusalar Höyük, an examination of noteworthy directions in museum exhibitions of antiquities in recent years, and a necrology for former AIA President Nancy C. Wilkie.
The AIA supports archaeological excavations, research, publications, and presentations. Find out more about our Fellowships and Grants, Publication Support, Career Services, and Annual Meeting.
The AIA has over 100 affiliated local societies throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe that host programs and carry out the AIA's mission in their communities.
